7308 Westmoreland Drive sits on one of University City’s most picturesque, tree-lined streets and is just a short walk from Clayton’s business district. This distinctive home, designed by the celebrated architectural firm Maritz & Young, is rich with period details and timeless charm.
Raymond E. Maritz and W. Ridgley Young, both Washington University graduates, designed over 160 homes and commercial spaces for St. Louis’s most prominent residents. Their work, spanning the 1920s and ’30s, reflected the era’s prosperity with lavish materials, intricate craftsmanship, and European-inspired styles, including Colonial Revival, Georgian, Spanish Eclectic, and Tudor.
Maritz, born in 1893 of French ancestry, honed his skills at Washington University and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After serving in WWI, he partnered with Young to create some of the region’s most elegant suburban homes. Notable neighborhoods featuring their work include Brentmoor, Carrswold, Wydown Terrace, and Huntleigh Village, where many houses are still distinguished by ornamental wrought-iron gates and meticulously designed facades.
Today, numerous Maritz & Young homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for their architectural and historical significance.
